Withdrawal of Rs 2,000 note
Earlier this week, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decided to withdraw the Rs 2,000 notes from circulation. RBI had also advised other banks to stop issuing Rs 2000 denominations with immediate effect. Since the announcement of the withdrawal, there has been a sharp increase in purchases of transportation fuel, gold and silver jewelry. Notably, there is no panic buying and rushing to banks in large numbers, as seen in 2016 during demonetization.
India reports 425 new cases of Covid-19, number of active infections down
India saw an increase of 425 new coronavirus infections on Saturday, while the number of active cases has fallen to 5,259 cases. According to the 08:00 data, the Ministry of Health reported that the death toll has risen to 5,31,859 with three fatalities – including one death expiated by Kerala. Active cases now comprise 0.01 percent of total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has been reported at 98.80 percent.
OpenAI founder Sam Altman on ChatGPT and job cuts
Sam Altman, the chief of OpenAI, the company behind the hugely popular ChatGPT bot, said his company’s technology won’t destroy the job market. He started trying to calm people’s fears since the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). The CEO assured that AI will not wipe out entire sectors of the workforce through automation. “The idea that AI is going to get to the point where people have no work to do or no purpose at all has never resonated with me,” Altman said.
G20 summit in Delhi
The center plans to host the mega summit of G20 leaders in Delhi from Sept. 9 to Sept. 10. The government is rolling out the red carpet at Delhi Airport with dedicated lounges and hangars for both Terminal 3 and Palam Air Force station. The government will also pay a lot of attention to the smallest details, such as multilingual design menus for gala lunches and dinners; traditional dress for visiting world leaders and their spouses; drone swarm and fireworks at a special cultural show; and the “fusion of the theme of the G20 meeting and the flavor of the participating country”.
NITI Aayog Gathering
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the 8th meeting of the NITI Aayog Board of Directors on May 27. A total of eight prime ministers, all from states not ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), skipped the meeting where they discussed issues such as health and skills development. , including women’s empowerment and infrastructure development. The top body of NITI Aayog includes all prime ministers, lieutenant governors of Union Territories, and numerous Union ministers. The Prime Minister is the Chairman of NITI Aayog.
