The Ministry of Railways announced on Friday that recruitment for the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) will take place through a specially designed exam. It will be conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) from 2023.
Preliminary screening takes place prior to the major written exam and interview at the IRMS. Eligible candidates must take the Civil Services (Prelims) exam to be shortlisted for the second step which is the IRMS main exam.
The IRMS (Main) exam has four papers with conventional essay questions.
Volume 1 contains paper A for any of the Indian languages selected by the candidate from those included in the eighth schedule of the Constitution. It would be for 300 marks. Paper B becomes English for 300 marks.
Part 2 is Elective 1 for 250 points and Elective 2 for 250 points. This is followed by part 3, a personality test for 100 points.
The optional courses to choose from are:
– Civil engineering
– Mechanical engineering
– Electrical engineering
– Commerce and Accountancy
The syllabus for the above papers is the same as for the Civil Services exam.
The final recommended candidates from the four disciplines are drawn and announced by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in order of merit. The government said that the written preliminaries and main rounds of CSE and IRMSE would take place simultaneously.
