Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday suggested making community service mandatory in schools and colleges as he pitched to instill the spirit of “sharing and caring” among youth. At a meeting here on the issue of ‘Sing, Dance and Pray: The Inspirational Story of Srila Prabhupada’, a biography of the founder of ISKON, he said that Indian civilization stands for universal values of unity, peace and social harmony, and he called for a “spiritual renaissance” to preserve and propagate these age-old values.
The vice president asked young people to be inspired by great saints and spiritual leaders such as Srila Prabhupada and to take in discipline, hard work, patience and empathy to become better people. You must always rise above narrow-minded considerations of caste, gender, religion and region and work to bring unity, harmony and peace to society, he said, according to a statement from the vice president’s secretariat. Naidu described Srila Prabhupada as a torchbearer of egalitarian thinking and said he embraced those discarded by society and brought joy and fulfillment to their lives.
Prabhupada praised his tireless efforts for universal peace and harmony through the dissemination of Vedic knowledge and culture, Naidu said: The only criterion he emphasized was bhakti, or love of god. Naidu praised ancient scriptures for their transcendental spiritual value and said that for millennia they have been manuals guiding people to live an ideal life based on ethics and values.
