CPI(M) leader AA Rahim on Tuesday sought the intervention of the Union government to transfer Manipur University students affected by the violence in the northeastern state to other central varsities to complete their studies. In a letter addressed to Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Rajya Sabha member said that students at the University of Manipur are currently going through harrowing experiences due to demands for document verification based on ethnic affiliations by radical groups within the university campus and hostels .
“These demands have caused fear, anxiety and a sense of discrimination among the students. What is more concerning is the targeted destruction inflicted on the students and their belongings. Gangs forming these radical groups have looted or set fire to almost all the hostel rooms of the University of Manipur, particularly targeting tribal community items,” Rahim said.
In the letter, he requested the Union Minister to take immediate and proactive measures to facilitate the transfer of affected students to other central universities across the country with the utmost urgency, minimizing further disruption to their education .
Rahim said the “intentional sabotage of personal property, including research materials, personal computers, books and term papers, has inflicted mental harassment on all students staying at the hostels. He also added that the students of Manipur University are experiencing a host of challenges due to the internet ban, which has resulted in a significant educational gap, widening already existing disparities in access to quality education. Hundreds of people have been killed in communal violence between Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur since clashes began on May 3.
