The student whose alleged social media post on April 16 sparked violence in the old town of Hubballi appeared Friday for the second VWO exam under police protection. The exam started on Friday and will last until May 18. The first assignment was Business Administration.
Police took student Abhishek Hiremath from Hubballi Sub-prison in Ashok Nagar to the university in a police vehicle. He had reportedly posted a video showing a saffron flag on a mosque, which is believed to be the source of the violence.
A large number of Muslims rioted, damaging many police vehicles, a hospital and a nearby Hanuman temple. The Hubballi police have arrested a cleric Wasim Pathan and 128 others in this regard. A search is underway for the remaining suspects, police said.
Police suspect Pathan climbed onto a police vehicle and delivered a speech that roused the crowd. However, the cleric denied the charges, saying he was trying to calm the crowd.
