NMC noted that two fake letters had been sent to MIMS seeking to increase the seats of MD Radio Diagnosis from 15 to 24 and MD Anesthesiology from four to 18, but noted that in fact no application had been received from this board in this regard for 2023-2024 (representative image)
Korukonda Babji, vice-chancellor of the university, said that in 30 years, the university has never verified any letter received on behalf of the NMC.
Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences, the regulatory authority for medical education in Andhra Pradesh, has not verified the so-called clearance letters issued by the National Medical Commission, which private medical colleges have issued to increase the number of medical seats in various branches, the deputy said chancellor of the varsity. said Friday.
Korukonda Babji, vice-chancellor of the university, said that in 30 years, the university has never verified any letter received on behalf of the NMC.
He said this in the wake of an inquiry initiated against three medical colleges in the state for increasing the number of medical seats in their institutions on the basis of a fake approval letter from NMC.
“We have never verified this in thirty years. Never happened. We receive so many letters from NMC, we cannot check every letter and it is very difficult to reach them (NMC). They are not answering,” Babji told PTI.
Rajamahendravaram-based GSL Medical College, Maharajah Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), Vizianagaram) and Shantiram Medical College, Nandyala, allegedly fraudulently increased the number of medical seats available to students.
On September 1, the NMC issued a public notice that the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) discovered that six forged letters had been produced by the GSL Medical College to increase the seats for MD General Medicine and MS General Surgery from 14 to 40 each and MS Obstetrics and Gynecology chairs from eight to 25 on June 6, 2023.
It also said that the same board claimed to have received another (forged) letter on July 7, 2023, granting it permission to increase the seats for Postgraduate Dermatology from four to fifteen, the seats for MD Anesthesiology from eight to fifteen and the seats for MDRadiation Oncology from two to five.
MARB clarified that the original letter dated May 19, 2023 was only for the increase in seats for MD General Medicine from 14 to 24, for MS Obstetrics and Gynecology from eight to 15 and for MS General Surgery from 14 to 24.
“Furthermore, no applications have been received from GSL Medical College for increase in seats in MD DVL (Dermatology), MD Anesthesiology and MD Radio Oncology for the academic year 2023-24 and therefore no communication has been sent to the college in this regard” , the public notice said.
Similarly, NMC noted that two fake letters were sent to MIMS seeking to increase the seats of MD Radio Diagnosis from 15 to 24 and MD Anesthesiology from four to 18, but noted that in fact no application was received from this council for 2023-2024.
Regarding Shantiram Medical College, NMC said that the college had produced eight fake letters that it had allegedly received, seeking to increase various seats in different departments, but in fact no permission was given.
Babji said that since things were going well, the varsity thought all those letters were really from NMC but later it was warned that they were fake.
He further says that no one yet knows who the whistleblower in the case is.
Meanwhile, VS Gurunadh, principal of GSL Medical College, claimed that he had not fabricated the letters and that the fake letters were sent to the college.
“It is not that the council has come up with a false and forged letter; the college has received a fake and forged letter,” Gurunadh said, but did not indicate whose work it was. His colleagues at MIMS and Shantiram could not be reached for their response on the matter.
