In the early 2010s, a new sound emerged from the Chicago rap scene. Drill music was instant and brash, relentlessly local yet easily accessible. It became a template from which much would be borrowed.
It has been repeated several times in subsequent years. One of the early stars of the Chicago scene, Lil Durk is now on a career high with the recent release of his album ‘7220’, his first album to top the Billboard album chart. New York drill, who found a sonic identity with the work of Pop Smoke, who was murdered in 2020, is also expanding, as can be heard in the music of Fivio Foreign, who tries to translate the sound on his debut album “BIBLE”. for a wider audience.
In this week’s Popcast, a talk about drill’s origins, its many global permutations, its intermittent embrace by the hip-hop mainstream, and the directions it could still go.

Joe Coscarelli, DailyExpertNews pop music reporter
