Jessie Ware’s fifth album, “That! Feels Good!,” is a robust, lavishly sung neo-disco manifesto, some of the most vibrant music the singer has released. It marks a solidification of Ware’s second phase, following her early years crafting understated club soul and grown-up contemporary R&B.
This second phase was made possible at least in part by the success of “Table Manners,” the podcast she co-hosts with her mother that is central to Ware’s public flourishing as a recognizable celebrity. Now she makes music that is playful and unfettered, but delivered as clearly as ever.
In this week’s Popcast, a talk about midcareer sonic switches, the importance of fantasy in making music, and how freedom outside of one’s music career can lead to liberation within it.
guests:
Caryn Ganz, the DailyExpertNews pop music editor
Lindsay Zoladz, a pop music critic for DailyExpertNews and writer of the newsletter The Amplifier
