Although he is known more for his three-pointers than his par-three, the Golden State Warriors icon is an avid golfer and is now trying to secure the next generation of the sport through his “Underrated Golf Tour.”
Organized in conjunction with the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), the Tour will be “completely free” to players and cover the costs of travel, accommodation and food.
“Everyone knows I love golf and I couldn’t be more excited to extend this love to the best young players across the country,” Curry said in a video posted to
Twitter on April 21.
“Less than 2% of golfers are people of color, and our tour provides an equality, access and opportunity platform for boys and girls who want to play and compete with the current best players on the AJGA.”
The five-event Tour kicks off in June in Chicago and concludes with the Championship Tour, which will be held August 28-30 in the Curry’s and Warriors Bay Area at TPC Harding Park.
The invitation-only championship is contested by the Tour’s 24 top-performing players, with the winner taking home the Curry Cup.
Building representation
Through his Underrated brand, Curry has hosted a basketball tour since 2019. Underrated Golf’s goal is to “provide equity, access, and opportunity to student-athletes from every community by balancing participation in the sport to truly reflect our society,” according to the organization. website.
The website says that, despite Tiger Woods’ storied career, “the number of black golfers entering his shoes is decreasing” in a “system and setting…designed to favor certain groups over others.”
Curry told the San Francisco Chronicle that through the initiative, “We’re trying to continue building representation in the game, and we should have a cool opportunity to bring perspective and resources to these kids to hopefully get them ready for success in golf, as an athlete, but also in golf and getting them ready for the staff.”
Curry impressed during his professional golf debut at the Ellie Mae Classic in 2017, and in response to his new tour, former world No. 1 Fred Couples, 1992 Masters champion, praised Curry’s “vision” for the sport.
