Woods shot a 1-under-par 69 on Friday to finish 3-over through the first 36 holes. The cutting line was 4-over. Woods had shot a 4-over 74 in the first round on Thursday.
Woods, 46, is now 12 shots behind current clubhouse leader Will Zalatoris, who is 9-under en route to Saturday’s third round.
During Thursday’s first round, Woods seemed to grin uncomfortably after teeing off on the eighth hole—his penultimate hole of his opening round. Immediately after the finish, Woods was asked by an ESPN correspondent how his surgically repaired right leg felt, Woods said, “it felt better before” as he smiled.
When ESPN asked him how Woods was able to ignore what was going on with him physically after Friday’s round, he replied, “There’s a mission. The mission is to keep going and turn this thing on one or the other.” another way to win and I know sometimes it doesn’t really feel right, but hey, that’s what it is. That’s life, that’s sport. We push it, sometimes it breaks, but that’s okay, you go back to outside and that’s why I have a great PT staff. I’m really good at breaking things and really good at fixing things, so it’s a great relationship.”
The third round of the PGA Championship kicks off on Saturday from the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
