The video shows women dancing with long sticks while wearing traditional Kerala saris
The nine-day festival of Navratri, dedicated to Maa Durga and her nine avatars, is celebrated with much joy and enthusiasm across the country. One of the main highlights of Navratri celebrations in the country is the traditional dance form ‘Garba’ which is a symbol of devotion and worship. People gather in large groups, dressed in traditional attire, and dance to the rhythmic beats of Garba with colorful dandiya sticks.
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday shared a video of a folk dance form from Kerala that has similarities with Gujarat’s Garba.
”Attention Gujarati sisters! This Navaratri, look at the dandiya Kerala style! ” he wrote while sharing the video. In the video, a group of women dressed in traditional off-white Kerala saris are seen dancing with each other with long sticks that resemble dandiya sticks.

The video has received over five million views, thousands of likes and some comments so far.
One user said: ‘It’s the same, just our sticks are smaller, grace is the same, fun is the same.’ Another commented: ‘Diversity is the delight, eclecticism the essence.’
A third said: ‘Wow, this looks fascinating! Reminds me of Dandiya. What is this dance called in Kerala?” A fourth wrote: ”Thanks for sharing. I never knew that Kerala had Navaratri and Kerala style dandiya, I just loved it.”
Notably, Garba is an energetic folk dance that originated in Gujarat and is performed with passion and enthusiasm on the auspicious Navratri festival. Dancers celebrating the Garba spirit dance in a circle around a large lamp or statue of goddess Shakti.
To celebrate garba, people wear rich, traditional and colorful clothes. Women wear Chaniya choli, a colorful three-piece dress, which consists of a blouse, skirt and dupatta. They also wear heavy jewelry: earrings, bracelets, necklaces, etc. Men wear kafni pajama with a Ghagra – a short round kurta – above the knees and a pagadi on the head.
