Mrs. Holmes and her husband Sean took Markus in
An animal shelter, Lucie’s Animal Rescue in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, said a woman wanted to put her two-year-old dog to sleep because he was barking. Lucie Holmes, who runs the center, was contacted earlier by the woman, she asked to bring her dog Markus, but had to turn her down because the center was full.
Mrs. Holmes received a call from a local vet two hours later and was told that the owner had wanted to euthanize Markus because of the barking. The vet refused the request to euthanize the dog.
Mrs Holmes in an interview with BBC said, “It’s disgusting. I haven’t been able to sleep much because I’m still so angry. Dogs bark. That’s what they do.”
“I told the owner there was absolutely no need to put Markus to sleep. He needs time and training,” she said.
Mrs Holmes and her husband Sean took in Markus despite already sharing her home with nine other dogs and 34 kittens, who are also looking for homes.
Ms Holmes shared in a lengthy post on Facebook about the incident. She wrote: “His owner contacted me asking me to rehome him because… ‘He barks at other dogs and people when he is gone so he needs to be rehomed’ Marcus is a 2 year old patterdale x Labrador. He was owned by the owner for 5 weeks.. I asked his owner what training she had done with Marcus to help him overcome his possibly nervous behavior, the answer was ‘he hasn’t had any’. I explained I am full at the moment but I will let her know when I have room to fit it in.”
She added: “2.5 hours later I got a call from a vet’s office. Marcus had been taken to the vet to be euthanized. To take his own life, as his owner didn’t bother to put any time or training into him. Luckily the vets declined and called us. They spoke to their behaviorist while they were there and offered sessions to the owner to help Marcus – the owner refused. I put him to sleep – I made room. I don’t have room but I got it not. Marcus hasn’t been with us for half an hour. He’s been sitting and taking a treat very carefully. Met 6 dogs – enjoyed a sniff and his tail hasn’t stopped wagging. He hasn’t barked yet.”
In her post, she also urged people to think twice before getting a dog: “Too many people get pets without considering how long it takes them to adjust, and expect them to be ‘perfect companions’ without really putting anything into them. Take some responsibility and invest time in them, you chose them to be part of your family. Stop destroying them just because you can’t be bothered to help them. It’s not their fault. You’re safe Marcus and loved . You will never be treated so badly again, and I can promise you that.”
