But a man in Kerala was handed a challan who said he was riding his motorcycle without enough fuel with passengers. The image of the e-challan sent by the Kerala Traffic Police was posted by the man on his Facebook page and is now circulating online and gaining popularity. The man was riding his Royal Enfield motorcycle when the challan was issued cartoq.com. The image of the traffic police e-challan lists the man’s name as Basil Syam and the fine amount as Rs 250.
BicycleDekho, which includes news about the auto sector, said in a report it had reached out to Mr Syam for comment. The man said he was on his way to his workplace when a local traffic officer asked him to stop because he was driving in the opposite direction on a one-way street.
Mr Syam said he was asked to pay a fine of Rs 250 for the violation, which he duly complied with. It was only after arriving at the office that he looked at the challan and found that the reason was “Driving without enough fuel with passengers,” he reported. BicycleDekho.
Many local news outlets and content creators on YouTube reported on the incident, saying there is no clause in India’s motor vehicle law or state law that prohibits anyone from driving or driving on low fuel.
According to mashableis the only fuel related offense mentioned in the Kerala Transport Act that if a commercial vehicle – such as a van, car, bus and car – runs out of fuel before the passengers are taken to the destination, the driver or owner of the vehicle pay a fine of €250.
The outlet’s report is based on a video released by former Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) Inspector Thankachan TJ, who also urged the transportation department to exercise caution when issuing challans.
