Have you ever been to a restaurant or a public place and got confused with the gender signs on the bathroom doors? Now signs on bathroom doors at a restaurant in Jaipur have sparked internet babbling. A podcaster named Ravi Handa took to Twitter to share pictures of the boards, which looked very similar.
The sign with a slanted red line indicated a woman in a sari, and a sign with a straight line falling down from the waist indicated a man in a mundu. These plates hung at a South Indian restaurant. In the caption, Mr Handa wrote: “Request to all restaurants – please start using English to designate bathrooms. Stop relying on our fashion sense.”

In a follow-up tweet, he wrote: “For the few who don’t get it, left with a slanted line indicates a saari, so feminine. Right with a straight line coming down from the waist, indicates a lungi/dhoti / mundu, so manly. Restaurant is located in Jaipur, Rajasthan.”
The social media users were confused by the signs. One user commented, “I lost it when I saw Mars and Venus in a pub 6 years ago.”
Another user wrote, “The most annoying trend! Especially after a drink or two, it’s impossible to judge.”
The third user wrote: “I don’t see a problem with this. The fact that men and women have different dresses is common knowledge. The images are confusing, that’s true. Someone may be mistaken about their assigned toilets. But I like the sari and lungi comparison.”
“It’s actually a very gender sensitive sign. Anyone wearing Saaree etc can enter regardless of biological sex,” the fourth user noted.
“It took me five minutes to identify myself,” the fifth user wrote.
