Days after this confrontation, the employee was called into a meeting with HR.
An employee recently opened up about his experience with being fired for setting boundaries at work, sparking quite a discussion on Reddit's anti-work subreddit about toxic work environments and the challenges of today's job market. The person, who remains unnamed, told how their refusal to work an extra 20 hours led to their dismissal from a mid-sized advertising agency.
In their post, the employee explained that their boss was trying to assign them an extra project that would take up 50% of their time. When the individual expressed concern about fitting this into their already full schedule, the boss compared their workload to that of another employee who worked until 2 a.m., implying that they had to do the same.
“I told him I don't want to be like this employee because she has meetings until 2 a.m. (she probably makes triple my salary too),” the employee stated.
Days after this confrontation, the employee was called into a meeting with HR, which was a clear indication of their impending dismissal.
“After I disagreed a few days later, he called me, and once I saw the HR person I knew it was over. It felt especially greedy because the team I led broke record sales this year , largely as a result of changes I've made.” made,” he wrote.
Reflecting on the experience, the employee noted, “To be honest, I'm not really upset. It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I also took a significant pay cut for this job.”

One user asked the person, “What type of job did you have before retail?”
He replied: “I was trying to work my way through college. I didn't work until I was 30; I was disabled and on the list until I was 25. My dreams of becoming an accountant are pretty much dead. I just hope I find something what I can live on. The problem is that I'm not suited for manual labor, and my PTSD and other issues are overwhelming right now.”
Reddit users expressed support for the employee's position. One user wrote: “Sorry you're going through this. I hope you find and get the support you deserve.” Another added: “The tech jobs landscape is pretty bad but seems to be improving somewhat. It's a tough time for a layoff but I'm glad you've stuck with it.”
