International Labor Day 2025: Every year on 1 May countries around the world observe the International Labor Day, also known as International Workers' Day, to honor the hard work and contributions of employees in industries and sectors. In addition to celebrating their efforts, the day is also a reminder of the importance of the rights of employees and the need for fair employment practices.

History and origin
The origin of the international working day dates from the late 19th-century workers' movement in the United States. On May 1, 1886, employees throughout America launched a strike that demanded a working day of eight hours – a campaign that culminated in the tragic Haymarket affair in Chicago.

What started when a peaceful protest became violent when a bomb was thrown at the police, which led to the death of seven officers and at least four civilians. The Haymarket affair became a symbol of the struggle for the rights of employees and played an important role in establishing 1 May as a day of international solidarity.

- While International Labor Day events in the United States are commemorating, both the US and Canada Labor Day on the first Monday of September not observe on 1 May.
- May Day is celebrated in more than 80 countries worldwide.
- In India, the first celebration of Labor Day in Chennai (then Madras) was held in 1923 by the Labor Kisan Party of Hindustan.
- May 1 also coincides with Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day, which marks the formation of the two Indian states in 1960.
- The first celebration of Canada took place in 1872, almost a decade before the United States officially recognized it.
