Stand-up comedian Nishant Suri
Audiences in Bengaluru were left disappointed after stand-up comedian Nishant Suri canceled his show on October 13 as the event organizers failed to pay dues. The Comicstaat Season 1 winner said on Instagram that The Entertainment Factory organizers have gone as far as sending a fake screenshot of the money transfer.
In an Instagram post, the comedian wrote, “I am already in Bangalore, and this is the last thing I wanted to do as it is completely unfair to the people who bought the tickets. However, I have no other choice as the organizers – @theentfactory, other comics already owe tens of lakhs, and cases are being filed against them.”
Mr Suri added that he knew he would not receive the payment as soon as he took the stage. He also added that several colleagues had warned him about this. “Once I get on stage, I know the payment won’t come. I was warned by several comics and agencies about working with these guys, but I assumed since there was a brand like @pmcbangalore involved is, no problem would be problem. I waited until the last minute but they have now ghosted me and stopped taking calls and replying to messages,” he said.
He stated that even the driver who was supposed to pick him up to reach the event was not paid. “I even got a call from the driver of the taxi they arranged to pick me up, saying he hadn’t paid and if there was anything I could do about it,” he wrote in the post.
In the comments section, the comedian said that the refunds are being processed and will be credited to the people who purchased the tickets for the show within ten days. The organizers have not issued a statement through their official platforms so far.
Several comedians commented on Mr Suri’s post, saying they had similar experiences.
Comedian Gaurav Gupta said: “Totally fraudsters.” Pavitra Shetty added, “I have been following it for a year. I still don’t get my money. Good call to cancel the show.”
“During the Indian Comedy Club days, these guys would try to scam newer artistes by offering to ‘manage’ them by charging the artist a flat fee of Rs 30,000 every month instead of a percentage. I was barely 18, but even I could see that the contract was bullshit. I’m glad to see the legacy continues here too,” said another user.
“I’m so sorry to hear this. Organizers who have no experience only want big names but aren’t willing to pay artist fees,” one person said.
