The confusion was caused by a waitress who was visually impaired.
According to a report in South China Morning Post (SCMP), seven customers were rushed to a hospital and had their stomachs emptied after a restaurant in eastern China served them liquid detergent instead of fruit juice.
According to the newspaper, the incident took place on January 16 in Zhejiang province. One of the affected customers, Sister Wukong, was dining with her family and friends at the restaurant when a waiter brought over a bottle of what they all mistook for fruit juice. The woman claimed in a video, which she later deleted from social media, that she and six other people were sent to a hospital to have their stomachs pumped after realizing a mistake had been made and their drinks had a weird taste.
Gastric suction, also known as gastric pumping, is a procedure doctors can use to quickly empty the contents of your stomach in an emergency.
According to SCMP, customers were told the confusion was caused by a waitress who was visually impaired. According to a police officer from Xucun Police Station, all seven people are in stable condition and will later seek compensation from the restaurant.
The outlet quoted Ms Wukong as saying from the hospital bed, “Let me show you all these people lying here. There were seven of us ate together and had to get our stomachs pumped.” She claimed her husband took the first sip and told the group it had a bitter taste. “I took a sip and swallowed. My throat immediately felt really bad,” the woman added.
Later, the waitress acknowledged she made the mistake because she was inexperienced and had an eye problem, according to SCMP. Ms. Wukong said, “She told us that she normally doesn’t work for the restaurant and only helped out for a day.”
The outlet further stated that it is unclear what kind of floor cleaner was served to guests. However, a search on a Chinese online marketplace showed several brands of floor cleaners that come in orange juice-like packaging. The packaging is often written in foreign languages, leading people who do not speak those languages to mistake it for another type of goods.
