Continuing its annual tradition, Montenegro last month kicked off its ‘laziest citizen’ competition, with participants lying on mats almost 24 hours a day. As the name suggests, the aim of the competition is to see which participant has the ”longest bedtime” and can lie down longer than everyone else. Subway reported.
The bizarre competition is held in the holiday resort of Brezna in northern Montenegro. This year’s challenge began in mid-August and is now entering its 26th day as only seven of the 21 participants remain. These contestants will compete for the top prize of $1,070 (approximately Rs 88,000).
According to the competition rules, the participants who compete while lying down are allowed to sleep, take care of their food and drink needs, read books and use the telephone. However, sitting down and standing up is considered a violation of the rules. Participants are allowed ten minutes every eight hours to go to the toilet.
Last year the record was 117 hours, but this year the competition has exceeded 26 days, according to reports The New York Post.
”We all feel good, excellent, there are no health problems, they are pampering us, all we have to do is stay down,” said 2021 champion Dubravka Aksic.
The competition was launched in the small country 12 years ago to mock a popular myth that labels Montenegrins as lazy, explains Radonja Blagojevic, one of the competition’s organizers.
”We organized this lying competition as a parody, playing on the stereotype that Montenegrins are lazy, to see who can last the longest. Currently, there are seven of the 21 candidates who have registered this year,” Ms. Blagojevic said.
She said the seven remaining competitors from a starting field of 21 had been down for 463 hours so far.
Traditionally the competition is held under a maple tree, but due to the bad weather they have moved to a wooden hut. According to Reuterscompetitors are under care and healthy so far.
