Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has publicly apologized for the extra charges charged on vegetarian meal orders. After a LinkedIn user complained about having to pay more for a vegetarian delivery, the problem came to light. Goyal was quick to acknowledge the problem and promised that the additional charges would be waived immediately.
He was responding to the post of Rohit Ranjan, assistant vice president of e-commerce at Route To Market, who originally mentioned this issue in a LinkedIn post.
Being a vegetarian in India feels like a curse these days. Zomato's latest masterstroke – the introduction of an “extra charge” for its vegetable enablement fleet – has officially converted us to a premium subscription. So, fellow herbivores, brace yourselves! from “green and healthy” to “green and pricey.” Thank you, Zomato, for proving that being vegetarian is now a luxury tax,” Mr Ranjan wrote.
The post caught the attention of Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, who immediately apologized.
“This is absolutely stupid on our part. I am deeply sorry. This charge will be removed today itself. It will also fix what is needed to fix the team so that such things don't happen again,” the Zomato CEO said. wrote.
Getting a quick response, Rohit Ranjan replied, “Thank you again for stepping in and saving us! What really surprised me during this journey was successfully taking this idea from ideation stage to execution, while at the same time getting the approval of the senior stakeholders secured.”
However, this LinkedIn conversation generated a plethora of interesting responses, with many users writing their responses to it.
“Someone at Zomato got an earful,” said one user.
“Looks like Zomato is learning from 'someone' to tax everything,” another user wrote.
