With the advent of social media, trends continue to come and go. The latest weight loss trend that is gaining popularity among Gen Z girls is the “tadpole water” trend. According to the New York PostThis trend basically involves a bottle of warm water, a few tablespoons of chia seeds, and a squeeze of fresh lemon. But the name “tadpole water” comes from the strong resemblance to baby frogs swimming in a pond.
Teens and twenty-somethings online are raving about the benefits of this homemade concoction, claiming that the trend helps them burn excess fat, reduce bloating, and promote gut health. One 18-year-old TikTok user shared that the concoction helped her lose a “pound a day” in three days. “I can attest to it working for weight loss,” Mariah Padilla said, according to the After.
Ms. Padilla described the texture and taste of the drink as “funky,” but admitted that “if it helps, it helps.” “It makes me gag… but it's worth it,” she said in the clip.
Another content creator, Ambria Streicher, claimed to have lost a few pounds using the homemade concoction. However, she said, “(To be honest) this stuff is NOT good.”
“I’m drinking my tadpole water hoping I get caught on Thursday,” lifestyle influencer Rosita said in a separate post.

Another cooking enthusiast reminded the “tadpole” participants of the cardinal rule for making the drink: soak the seeds. “Health tip of the day: If you don’t add water to your chia seeds before you eat them, your chia seeds will expand in your stomach, which will cause a blockage — meaning you’ll be constipated. And it’s just going to mess with your digestive system,” she said.
Chia seeds have become incredibly popular in recent years as a superfood among many nutritionists and health experts. According to the outlet, chia seeds in water are said to have pond-blasting properties. “Chia seeds are packed with nutrients that may provide numerous health benefits,” a recent report from Harvard Health explained.
The experts said that the seeds are packed with fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They aid digestion and weight management and also help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
“When you eat chia seeds, they form a gel-like substance in the stomach, which can help you feel fuller and reduce your appetite and calorie intake,” the researchers said.
