Restaurants in California, US, have imposed ‘cost charges’, especially if a bottomless brunch is served, to prevent customers from getting too drunk and vomiting on the premises.
According to CBS News, an Oakland eatery has been using a sign for two years to warn mimosa drinkers that they will be charged a $50 cleaning fee if they throw up in the restaurant. “Dear mimosa lovers, please drink responsibly and know your limits. The $50 cleaning fee will be automatically applied to your tap if you throw up in our public areas. Thank you for your understanding,” the sign reads.
However, the restaurant’s owner said he has not yet charged anyone for the cleaning fee, but added that the sign is certainly a deterrent. “It was really hard cleaning. People were scared because of COVID. And this happened often. My employees don’t want to do that. It got better. Now [customers] know they have to pay. They understand,” he said.

According to People magazineAnother San Francisco restaurant is also warning brunch lovers that they will have to pay a $50 fee for any incident resulting from intoxication. Please drink responsibly. $50 cleaning fee per person for any incidents [that] suffer as a result of drunkenness… *responsible for the entire group*,” reads a warning on the restaurant’s menu.
The restaurant stated that it has seen fewer indoor forced entry incidents since the note was posted. “It’s better, but every other week we see someone throwing up or vomiting. Now they’re going outside,” the owner said, according to the outlet.
Meanwhile, California’s not the only restaurant in Singapore also recently attracted attention online after a viral video showed a woman arguing with restaurant staff, who insisted she pay a $15 cleaning fee after her drunken friend threw up.
It’s not just restaurants charging extra for cleaning up messes either, as Uber in the US also allows drivers to charge cleaning fees, which range from $20 to $150 if passengers make a mess.
