The Internet is a repository of strange content that will never cease to amaze you. There are some moments captured on camera that come up over and over and that can send shivers down your spine every time. Like the video of a humpback whale almost swallowing two kayakers. The incident took place on a California beach in November 2020, when the kayakers were simply watching the movement of whales. The clip was originally posted to Facebook by Kellie Balentine and later made available by ViralHog.
It has once again gone viral on social media, with many Reddit users posting the clip to various boards.
Julie McSorley and Liz Cottriel, the two friends who narrowly escaped death, watched the humpback whales feed on silverfish when one surfaced beneath their kayak, capsized and nearly swallowed the two.
Julie recalled the harrowing incident as she spoke to DailyExpertNews days later. The woman said before she could understand anything, she was in the water.
She went on to say that the two friends learned an important life lesson: “Whales need their space.”
Footage of the incident, recorded by a spectator, makes it appear that the two were nearly swallowed by the whale. Fortunately, they just tipped over and ended up in the water after the whale left.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), humpback whales mostly feed on krill and small fish. They are vigorous swimmers and can be found near shorelines.
It further said that commercial whaling has seriously reduced the numbers of humpback whales from historical levels. The United States lists all humpback whales as endangered under the Endangered Species Conservation Act in 1970 and then under the Endangered Species Act in 1973.
Meanwhile, Ms. McSorley told: CBC that she won’t kayak after the whales are out unless she can keep a soccer field away from the creatures.
