A woman in Austria was shocked when she found 18 scorpions in her suitcase after returning from a holiday in Croatia.
According to News week, the woman from Natternbach was unpacking after returning home on Saturday when she saw a family of scorpions in her suitcase. She found 18 live scorpions in the suitcase, apparently a mother and her babies.
On Facebook, animal rescue service Tierhilfe Gusental said: “We were contacted this afternoon by a lady from Natternbach because blind passengers had settled in their luggage during their journey to Croatia.”
“Scorpion with cubs to be exact. The animals have been detained and handed over to us. They are currently staying at the Linz animal shelter until they start their return journey,” the organization added.

Citing local media Upper Austria News, New York Post reported that animal control has taken the scorpions and now plans to return them to their native Croatia. An animal protection officer stated that the stingers “could probably multiply well in Austria, but they don’t belong here”.
According to reports, this is the third case of scorpions from Croatia arriving in Austria. Last month, a woman from Linz discovered a sting in her apartment, even after a holiday in Croatia. The woman had been home for three weeks when she made the terrifying discovery.
Scorpions belong to the class Arachnida and are closely related to spiders, mites and ticks. There are about 2000 species of scorpions, but only 30 to 40 of them have venom strong enough to kill humans.

There are only a few different species of scorpions found in Croatia, and none of them are life-threatening. However, their stings can still cause pain, swelling, itching, redness and a burning sensation, the outlet reported.
