Two persons were reported to have lost their lives on Sunday after consuming poisonous liquor in the Lakari Nabiganj of Bihar’s Siwan.
Abhishek Chandan, the public grievance officer of the Siwan sub-department, said one of the dead died after consuming counterfeit liquor, while the other was pronounced dead at Siwan Hospital.
“One person has been brought to death and five others are currently being treated at Siwan Hospital. The cause of death is yet to be determined, which will be clarified after the post-mortem reports,” said Sub-Divisional Public Grievance Officer, Abhishek Chandan.
According to the information, the dead – Janak Bean alias Janak Prasad and Naresh Bean from Bala village in Siwan’s Nabiganj – complained of abdominal pain in the night and their eyesight was also affected, then their relatives took them to the Siwan. Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared they had been ‘brought to death’.
Since the case of deaths due to poisonous drink has been on the forefront, the district administration has started running camps in the village.
“At least two persons were pronounced dead after being sent to Siwan Sadar Hospital for consuming this inappropriate drink. About dozens of people are still unwell and police have set up camps in the village,” said the village’s district councilor . Ramesh Kumar told ANI.
According to the information, the number of deaths due to this improper drink consumption is likely to be increased.
Notably, the incident came days after Bihar police recovered toxic liquor bottles hidden in a gutter in Danapur on December 21, 2022.
The sale and consumption of alcohol was banned in Bihar in April 2016 by the government headed by Nitish Kumar.
Earlier in December 2021, a tragic incident of deaths was reported from Bihar’s Saran district of Bihar’s Chhapra in which more than 70 people were killed by consuming counterfeit liquor in a local tent. After the death, angry villagers blocked the Masrakh Hanuman Chowk on Bihar State Highway 90 and raised slogans against the district administration.
The incident also sparked a political brawl in the Bihar assembly, with opposition leaders launching a strong attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the spate of spurious drink-related deaths.
