Another corpse has been recovered from the rubble at a collapsed tunnel in Jammu after part of an under-construction tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in the Ramban district collapsed late Thursday night. The official death toll has risen to four, while six people are still missing and a rescue operation is underway.
The rescue of nine workers feared trapped under the rubble was resumed early Saturday after another landslide on Friday night forced authorities to suspend the process.
The tunnel, which is located on the highway near Khooni Nallah in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, collapsed around 10:15 p.m. Thursday as the audit-related work began, after officials confirmed that one worker had died and three others were rescued.
A small part of the front of the tunnel had collapsed, reports PTI news agency.
Nine were feared trapped under the rubble.
A rescue operation was soon launched but had to be suspended Friday night due to another landslide and bad weather. More than 15 rescue workers, including the Ramsu Police Station’s Station House Officer, Nayeem-Ul-Haq, narrowly escaped during this time, officials said.
Multiple tunnels are being built on the Banihal-Ramban section of the road, the most difficult part of the highway’s ambitious dual carriageway.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh had called the accident “unfortunate”.
“I am in constant contact with DC Mussrat Islam. Nearly 10 workers were trapped under the rubble. Two more were rescued and hospitalized with injuries. Rescue operations are in full swing. Civil administration and police are monitoring the situation he said yesterday.
