Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has sought investment from the Tata Group in and around Nagpur, citing strengths such as infrastructure, land availability and connectivity in his home state of Maharashtra, as two recent mega-projects went to Gujarat.
In a letter to Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Oct. 7, Mr. Gadkari, who manages the road transport and highway portfolio, said that group companies engaged in companies such as steel, automotive, consumer products, IT services and aerospace may choose to to invest in Nagpur.
The letter shared with media on Saturday comes amid the loss of several major projects from Maharashtra to neighboring Gujarat, such as Foxconn-Vedanta’s investment of over Rs 1.5 lakh crore in chip manufacturing and the Rs 22,000 crore aircraft construction project. to which the Tata Group is attached. with Airbus.
At a recent event, Mr Chandrasekaran had said that the Tata Group is exploring investments in electronics, renewable energy, electric vehicles and other modern sectors, working with the newly formed state government under Prime Minister Eknath Shinde.
In the letter, Mr. Gadkari said there are more than 3,000 hectares of land in the multimodal international Hub Airport in Nagpur (MIHAN) SEZ and non-SEZ, adding that many companies have already established themselves in the vicinity.
“All Tata Group companies such as Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consumer Products, Voltas, Titan Industries and Big Basket can take advantage of Nagpur’s strengths such as overnight connectivity to 350 districts of six states, lower rates for land, manpower and storage,” the minister said in the letter.
Underlining that the group companies have been present in Nagpur in central India for more than a century, Mr. Gadkari told Mr. Chandrasekaran that the Tata Group airlines, Air India, Vistara and AirAsia India, can cut costs by turning Nagpur into a hub. of their activities and choose to park planes overnight.
Air India already has a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at MIHAN, Mr Gadkari said, stressing that given the group’s expansion plans in the sector, more MROs could be considered.
Separately, the group may also be looking at large storage for aerospace parts for its own use as well as for other aircraft, he said.
He said the group may also consider going into container production, saying that delivery of Tata Steel is possible in the Nagpur region, which bodes well for the company.
TCS can expand its presence in the MIHAN area thanks to the quality educational institutions in the area, wrote Mr. Gadkari.
The letter was written after a briefing from the Vidarbha Economic Development Council, Mr Gadkari said, requesting Mr Chandrasekaran to meet with the think tank’s delegation on the rationale for creating a hub in Nagpur for the Tata Group. .
