Thiruvananthapuram:
African swine fever has been reported from two farms in Mananthavady in Kerala’s Wayanad district, officials said today.
The disease was confirmed in pigs from two farms in the district after the samples were tested at the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.
A Department of Animal Husbandry official told Press Trust of India that the samples were sent for testing after pigs died en masse on one of the farms.
“Now the test result has confirmed the infection. Directions have been given to cull 300 pigs from the second farm,” the official said.
The ministry said measures are being taken to prevent the disease from spreading.
The state had tightened biosecurity measures earlier this month after a warning from the Center that African swine fever has been reported in Bihar and some northeastern states.
African swine fever is a highly contagious and deadly viral disease that affects domestic pigs.
