The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police has arrested an MBBS doctor from AIIMS and his sister for cheating on the basis of forged documents and causing wrongful loss to another doctor in the amount of about Rs 16 crores.
The suspects have been identified as Dr. Cherian and his sister Meenakshi Singh, a native of Bengaluru, Karnataka. The suspected Dr. Cherian completed his MBBS from AIIMS, Delhi and Meenakshi Singh completed her BE (Computer Science) and MBA from IIM.
Both were arrested from a resort in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, while trying to escape the investigation and were released.
According to the police, both accused are siblings, who came along with friend and partner Dr Gandharv Goyal to start an app-based business based on artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare field. When investments in the company flourished, both accused Dr. Gandharv Goyal, however, based on forged and fabricated documents.
“It is a case of fraud, criminal breach of trust by the director and forgery with the other director and partner Dr Gandharv Goyal on the basis of forged documents to buy back Dr Gandharv Goyal’s shares for a meager amount of Rs. 900 only about the same percentage of shares was issued to new investors for a total consideration of about Rs 16 crores. Therefore, the wrongful loss caused to the partner and director Dr. Gandharv Goyal in the amount of Rs 16 crores approximately,” it said.
A case was registered on the complaint of Dr. Gandharv Goyal, a resident of Noida and an investigation was launched.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the complainant was one of the directors and shareholders of “Synapsica Technologies Pvt. Ltd.” with its office in Jasola, Delhi. Both the accused became directors and shareholders of the said company.
In the month of December 2019, the company became successful and was selected in Y-Combinator (the world’s best accelerator program) and also raised an investment of about Rs 5 Crores from various investors.
Furthermore, a company was also established in the US in the name of “Synapsica Healthcare Inc.” to expand the business in the US and a subsidiary of Synapsica Healthcare Inc was incorporated in India in the name of Synapsica Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. for the company’s expansion in India.
Police said the accused Dr. Cherian and Meenakshi hatched a criminal conspiracy and based on Dr. Gandharv Goyal, created with the help of DocuSign append, acquired his shares.
“During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused Dr. Cherian and Meenakshi, after hatching a criminal conspiracy between them, drove a company to the US to attract more investors in their company Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. and later restart the company Dr Gandharv Goyal’s share in the company M/s Synapsica Healthcare Inc., based on a forged signature made by Gandharv Goyal’s DocuSign app. Later they issued the same percentage of shares at the total amount of Rs 16 crores approx. to new investors from both India and the US,” the police said.
During the investigation, all stock agreements and term sheets of the above-mentioned suspects were seized, ROC data obtained and analysed, bank statements taken and analyzed and minutes book obtained and analysed.
A case has been registered under Sections 409, 420, 468, 471 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at PS EOW, New Delhi.
