The TMC leader said his party will continue to oppose the CAA, calling it a “draconian bill”.
Guwahati:
Trinamool Congress Secretary General Abhishek Banerjee said on Wednesday that Interior Minister Amit Shah remained silent on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) during his two-day visit to Assam. in West Bengal.
He claimed that the CAA is “used” by BJP leaders like a carrot on a stick. “CAA is a political tool and we should not fall into this trap,” Banerjee said at a public event here.
The Secretary General of TMC said the Home Secretary had varied about the CAA in West Bengal and Assam.
“This is proof of the kind of politics that the BJP-led government is doing. They are using this issue as a ‘jumla’. The Citizenship Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha in 2019 and within a month it was passed state came into effect and became CAA. It usually takes you 3-4 months to formulate the rules of a new law, but it has been more than two and a half years and the center has applied for six extensions, but is still not in able to formulate the rules of the CAA,” said the TMC leader.
He also said his party will continue to oppose the CAA, calling it a “draconian bill”.
“We are against this draconian bill. In West Bengal, Amit Shah said that the CAA will be implemented after the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided. In Assam, he is mother on the matter. This hypocrisy of the Home Affairs Minister of the Union is now in open. How can be called illegal those people who voted you (BJP) in power? In Assam, NRC list was prepared after spending Rs 1600 crore and in NRC list around 19 lakh people were excluded. It’s a failed list,” he added.
Responding to the Union Home Secretary’s comment that the West Bengal government is not cooperating with the Center to tackle the infiltration problem, Mr Banerjee said the Home Office should guard their borders.
“It is the responsibility of the Border Guard Force under the Ministry of Interior. I would like to see if they can provide information about the non-cooperation of the Bangladeshi government in this matter,” Mr Banerjee said.
“Some people say Hindus are in danger and others say Muslims are in danger. But, I will say, take off your community goggles, you will see India is in danger,” he added.
Speaking about next year’s election polls in Tripura and Meghalaya, the TMC leader said the TMC will tackle the BJP head-on in both states.
“We have also become the main opposition in Meghalaya and Tripura. We have started our unit where we have contested the local elections to the best of our ability. Next year, when we go to the polls, TC will use all its strength to make sure that we can defeat the autocratic forces. We are not in Assam to replace anyone. We will visit every nation with our vision of the development of the state and make sure the ideology of TMC reaches every nation. We will do everything possible to drive the corrupt BJP government from power in Assam,” he said.
The secretary general of TMC visited the historic Kamakhya Temple on Wednesday and offered his prayer to the goddess Kamakhya. He also addressed a party workers’ meeting held at ITA Machchowa and inaugurated the party’s Assam unit office.
