New Delhi:
Cooperative GCMMF, which markets milk and milk products under the Amul brand, has increased milk prices by Rs 2 per liter as of Tuesday due to the increase in input costs.
In a statement, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) said it has decided to increase milk prices by Rs 2 per liter in all Indian markets where Amul markets its fresh milk, effective March 1.
“The increase of Rs 2 per liter translates into a 4% increase in MRP, which is much lower than average food inflation,” it added.
In Ahmedabad and Saurashtra markets of Gujarat, the price of Amul Gold will be Rs 30 per 500ml, Amul Taaza Rs 24 per 500ml and Amul Shakti will be Rs 27 per 500ml.
“It is worth noting that Amul has increased the prices of its fresh milk category by only 4% per year for the past two years,” said GCMMF.
This price increase is done because of the increase in the costs of energy, packaging, logistics and animal feed, which has led to an increase in total operating costs and milk production.
“Given the increase in input costs, our member unions have also increased the farmer’s price from 35 to 40 rupees per kg of fat, which is more than 5% compared to last year,” the statement said.
It is Amul’s policy to pass on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to the milk producers.
“The price review will help support rewarding milk prices for our milk producers and encourage them to increase milk production,” said GCMMF.
GCMMF had last increased milk prices by Rs 2 per liter in July 2021.
