Assam:
Another student has been arrested in Assam for a controversial Facebook post, where he allegedly supported the Ulfa (I) terror group led by fugitive leader Paresh Asom alias Paresh Baruah. Udalguri district police have arrested 22-year-old Pramod Kalita, a Tangla College student, for allegedly supporting the group in a social media post, officials said Monday.
He was arrested from Kalaigaon on Sunday. He is now in judicial custody.
In his post in English and Assamese, Kalita, a resident of Borangabari in Udalguri, is said to have said he was willing to give his life for Ulfa-I and the group leader Paresh Baruah.
“I always support ULFA,” he wrote. In response to a comment demanding his arrest, he challenged the police to arrest him. However, he added that although he loved Ulfa, he was not a member of it, the police added.
On Sunday, an initial information report was filed at the Kalaigaon Police Station and Kalita has been arrested, police sources added. He has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), which charge him with criminal conspiracy, waging or attempting to wage war against the state and supporting a terrorist outfit.
This is the second arrest in Assam in the past two months.
On May 18, police in Golaghat arrested Barshashree Buragohain, a sophomore graduating student from Jorhat’s DCB College for a social media post in which she wrote: “Akou korim rashtradroh (will rebel against the nation again)”.
The 19-year-old student has been in prison for the past two months.
Last week, based on her application, a court allowed her to take her exams from prison. Gauhati’s Supreme Court will hear her bail request on July 21.
