New Delhi:
Four murder cases, a dozen gang members, Insta reels with guns and cinematic dialogue – the prime suspect in the midnight murder of Amazon executive Harpreet Gill is an 18-year-old like no other.
The biography on his Instagram profile, which has more than 2,000 followers, reads: “Naam Badnaam, Pata Kabristan, Umra Jine Ki, Shauk Marne Ka – which roughly means: “I am infamous, the graveyard is my address, it is my age to live, but I want to die”.
Scrolling down you will see Mohammad Sameer alias Maya posing for pictures in striking clothes and with long hair. The pictures suggest that his love needs to be clicked. So far it is a profile of a teen who loves to dress up and pose.
But click on the highlights and you’re in for a shock. One scroll shows the prison and several youths are captured behind bars, another shows Maya posing with guns and firing. There’s one titled Maya Gang and it shows about a dozen teens. According to the police, it is not about a random group of teenagers who want to show off, but about a gang that has been terrorizing Northeast Delhi.
The gang calls itself “Maya Gang” after its leader. Maya and his 18-year-old colleague Bilal Gani have been arrested in connection with Gill’s murder and the police are looking for the other suspect.
Maya, who recently turned 18, was involved in at least four murders as a minor, police have found. His associate, Gani, turned 18 this Sunday and was involved in a murder and robbery case last year. Gani was sent to a children’s observation house, but he managed to get out and worked in a welding workshop.
While Harpreet died on the spot, his uncle Govind, 32, is fighting for his life after Maya allegedly shot them in the head.
The shooting, police have discovered, was the result of a road rage incident.
At around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Harpreet and Govind rode a bicycle through a narrow alley, police have discovered. Defendant Maya, Gani and their associates Sohail (23), Mohammad Junaid (23) and Adnan (19) returned from a party on two scooters. The two-wheelers faced each other on the narrow track. An argument ensued over who would give way. The argument turned into a fight that ended in Maya shooting Harpreet and Govind.
The arrests came after police scanned footage from a CCTV camera in the roadway. The footage shows two suspects, their faces covered, on a scooter.
Police said efforts are being made to apprehend the other suspect and further investigations are underway.
