The BJP on Thursday fired its district chairman Bandipora in Jammu and Kashmir after he was arrested, along with another party leader, for extorting money from a woman to secure her brother’s release from police custody.
Police have charged Abdul Rehman Tikri, Bandipora district president and another party leader Mushtaq Ahmad, Sarpanch (village-elected chief), after a woman complained that the duo extorted a lakh of Rs from her promising to get her brother out of police custody.
Both BJP leaders have been arrested. Hours after the arrest, BJP state president Ravinder Raina discharged Tikri from his responsibilities.
“Abdul Rehman Tikri, District Chairman, BJP Bandipora has been relieved of his responsibilities as District Chairman, BJP Bandipora and all other party responsibilities with immediate effect,” said Mr Raina’s order.
There are allegations that touts extort money from families whose relatives have been arrested by the police.
Recently, Srinagar Police have asked people to come forward and report any bribe demands. Police also distributed phone numbers and email for reporting bribery requests.
“All residents of Srinagar district are requested to come forward and report any claim for bribe or favor by any officer/employee of Srinagar district to the numbers below and to email [email protected]. These numbers /email are under the direct supervision of SSP, Srinagar,” the Srinagar Police tweeted.
