The Mumbai-based AB General Electoral Trust donated Rs 10 crore to the ruling Bharatiya Janata party in fiscal year 2021-22, India’s Election Commission said Tuesday.
The trust received Rs 10 crore in two installments of Rs 5 crore each from Hindalco Industries Ltd in the financial year and donated the full amount to the BJP in two installments of Rs 5 crore each.
The Chennai-based Triumph Electoral Trust received Rs 50 lakh from Tube Investments of India Limited in FY 2021-22.
It donated the full amount to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the party that rules Tamil Nadu.
Both trusts had filed their annual dues statements with the election commission, which released them into the public domain on Tuesday.
Electoral trusts are non-profit corporations established for the purpose of receiving donations from an individual or a company and distributing them to political parties. The trusts are also exempt from income tax.
