Even as the opposition has yet to choose its candidate in presidential polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold its parliamentary board meeting here on Tuesday, where it is likely to finalize its election ahead of the July 18 election, sources said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the meeting virtually.
The BJP has already formed a 14-member management team to oversee the elections. Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is the chairman of this team.
BJP chief JP Nadda is holding an important meeting to brainstorm on the upcoming elections on Sunday, attended by members of the management team. The meeting was attended by prominent leaders such as Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Ashwini Vaishnaw, G Kishan Reddy, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Vinod Tawde, CT Ravi, Sambit Patra and others.
In particular, Mr Nadda and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh were given the responsibility to discuss the candidate for the presidential election with all political parties.
They held talks with Sharad Pawar, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, Trinamool Congress President and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, United States Leader Janata Dal and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Biju Janata Dal supremo and Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik and the National Conference. chief Farooq Abdullah, but so far no result has been achieved.
The deadline to submit nominations is June 29, the poll will take place on July 18, and votes will be counted on July 21.
Opposition leaders, meeting in the national capital on June 15, announced that they have decided to field one consensus candidate for the presidential election.
Leaders of 17 political parties took part in a pivotal opposition party meeting convened by Mamata Banerjee to reach consensus on drafting a joint candidate against the NDA in the presidential election. TMC, Congress, CPI, CPI(M), CPIML, RSP, Shiv Sena, NCP, RJD, SP, National Conference, PDP, JD(S), DMK, RLD, IUML and JMM – took part in the meeting accompanying the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi on June 15.
