Nupur Sharma, the BJP leader who has been suspended over outrage over her comments about the Prophet Muhammad, has been given security after she complained about death threats to Delhi police.
Security has been given to Nupur Sharma as a “preventive measure”, police said.
“Sharma and her family have been given police protection after she claimed she received threats and was harassed for her comments,” an official said, according to PTI news agency.
Police said on May 28 that its cyber cell unit received a complaint from Nupur Sharma against several individuals about “death threats and targeted hatred”.
An FIR was registered with a list of criminal harassment allegations.
“During the investigation, a new complaint was received from Nupur Sharma against certain individuals promoting enmity,” the officer said.
“Notices have been sent to Twitter Inc. and a response is awaited. The investigation into the matter is ongoing,” added the officer quoted by PTI.
Nupur Sharma was suspended by the BJP for her comments about the prophet during a TV debate 10 days ago that sparked furious reactions and official protests from at least 15 countries, including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman , the UAE, Iran, Jordan, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Maldives, Libya and Indonesia.
Several Gulf states convened Indian envoys and condemned what they called anti-Islamic statements by BJP spokesmen.
Nupur Sharma withdrew her statement “unconditionally”, claiming she was responding to “continuous insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev (Lord Shiva)”.
The government, trying to quell the anger, told nations the comments reflected the views of “edge elements”.
The BJP, which has suspended Nupur Sharma and expelled another leader, Naveen Jindal, for their comments about the Prophet Muhammad, said it “strongly opposes any ideology that insults or humiliates any sect or religion” and “that attacks people or philosophy.” not promote”.
As outrage mounted and the crisis snowballed, she posted tweets urging the media not to make her speech public as her family faced a security risk.
The BJP’s suspension letter to her, which was posted online by many Twitter handles, had her home address.
