Hyderabad police filed a case against Siddharth actor on Wednesday for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal on Twitter.
In a telephone conversation, KVM Prasad, Additional DCP, Cyber Crime Wing, Detective Department, Hyderabad, said: “A woman named Prerna approached Cyber Crime Wing and filed a complaint against actor Siddharth for his sexist comments against shuttler Saina Nehwal on Twitter.”
The police officer said the basis of the complaint is a case registered under sections 509 of the Indian Penal Code and 67 of the Information Technology Act and an investigation has been launched. Notice will be made to Siddharth, the additional DCP added.
Siddharth was embroiled in controversy that erupted after the actor retweeted a message from Ms Nehwal in a Twitter post on January 6 expressing concern over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security breach during his visit to Punjab on January 5. .
Several activists criticized Siddharth for his comments, calling it “sexist, misogynist” and demanding that he apologize to Ms Nehwal
The NCW also said the actor’s comment was “misogynistic and outrageous for a woman’s modesty amounting to contempt and insult to women’s dignity on social media platforms.”
The actor then apologized to Ms Nehwal on Tuesday evening after he was criticized for his “rude joke” aimed at the badminton player.
In an open letter, Siddharth claimed that his “pun” and “humour” had no malicious intent.
