The Congress will hold a three-day brainstorming session in Udaipur in Rajasthan.
New Delhi:
Congress holds a three-day brainstorming session on Chintan Shivir in Rajasthan’s Udaipur in the shadow of polls and dissension in the party that has plummeted over the past seven years.
The party said it would think in the next three days to move in a new direction by tackling various challenges and paving the way for the country’s bright future.
Ahead of the brainstorming conclave, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, in sharp remarks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, said it was “painfully clear” that his “minimum government, maximum governance” policies meant putting the country in a permanent state of polarization, brutalizing minorities and threatening political opponents.
The three-day ‘Nav Sankalp Chintan Shivir’ is being held against the backdrop of a string of electoral defeats and dissensions in the party which has seen a sharp decline over the past seven years.
Here are the highlights on Chintan Shivir Day 2 in Udaipur:

- The state of the Indian economy is a matter of great concern. A slower rate of growth has been the hallmark of the current government over the past 8 years. The recovery after the pandemic was indifferent and came to a standstill. Growth estimates for 2022-23 have been lowered from time to time over the past five months.
- Inflation has risen to unacceptable levels and threatens to rise further. WPI inflation stands at 14.55 percent and CPI inflation is 7.79 percent. In fact, the government is fueling inflation through its wrong policies, mainly through high taxes on petrol and diesel, high government-regulated prices and high VAT rates.
- The work situation has never been this bad. The employment rate (LFPR) is at an all-time low of 40.38 percent and the unemployment rate stands at 7.83 percent.
- We reiterate our accusation that spending on social services as a percentage of total spending fell to an average of 5 percent (over 8 years) from an average of 9 percent in the 10 years between 2004 and 2014.
- The external situation has increased the pressure on the economy. The government seems to have no idea how to deal with these developments. Over the past 7 months, $22 billion has flown out of the country. Foreign exchange reserves are depleted by $36 billion. The exchange rate stands at Rs 77.48 to a dollar, the highest ever.
“I am sending a discussion on economics with nine colleagues. Our group has 60 Members. Yesterday 37 Members gave their opinion for 4 hours. The discussions will continue today and tomorrow,” says P Chidambaram.
