Dipankar Datta, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, addressed a seminar.

Poona:

Dipankar Datta, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, signaled rising cybercrime across the country on Saturday.

Referring to the murder of Mumbai woman Shraddha Walkar by her live-in partner, who allegedly dismembered her body into 35 pieces and dumped them in the Delhi forests, Judge Datta said the case represents the downside of internet access in this time and age.

Speaking at a seminar, ‘Dispute Resolution Mechanisms in Telecom, Broadcasting, IT and Cyber Sectors’ organized by Telecom Dispute Statement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) in Pune on Saturday, Judge Datta said: “You have just read in the papers about certain stories of love in mumbai and horror in delhi (shraddha walkar case) all these crimes are committed because there is so much access to the material on the internet now i am sure the government of india is thinking in the right direction the indian telecommunications law is there and we need some robust legislation to address all situations, if indeed we are to achieve our goal of fulfilling our preamble pledge to ensure justice for the brotherhood of all our citizens to preserve the dignity of each individual .”

“In the new era, new tools are being invented. In 1989 we didn’t have cell phones. Two or three years later we got pagers. Then we had those big cell phones from Motorola and now they’ve condensed into little phones that are equipped with everything you can think of, but they can also be hacked by anyone, making it an invasion of our privacy.”

Justice Datta emphasized the need to have regional banks in line with the National Green Tribunal Act, for hearing such cases, saying, “We should examine whether instead of one main bank (TDSAT) in Delhi, with hearings allowed in six other places, we should have regional banks in accordance with the National Green Tribunal Act. The NGT has five banks across India”.

“These are lofty goals set by our founding fathers. They had prepared our Constitution very carefully – the highest law in the land. Let’s not abandon the Constitution,” he added.
