Assam CM said Congress is pursuing appeasement policy towards Hamas ahead of Telangana polls.
New Delhi:
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday asserted that Congress was not condemning Hamas and declared its support for Palestine at the insistence of party leader Rahul Gandhi, keeping an eye on the upcoming Assembly elections in Telangana.
Mr Sarma also said that there is no unity among the voters of the newly formed Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) and that it was created only to “cheat” the people of India.
“See, there was a CWC meeting recently. The Hamas issue was discussed there. Everyone said at the meeting that it is necessary at this time to condemn Hamas. But Rahul Gandhi said that elections are coming in Telangana, so we must support Palestine. Let me tell you the inside story of the CWC. After that, this resolution was passed,” he told reporters here.
At its last meeting on October 9, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian cause, without mentioning Hamas’s horrific attack on Israel on October 7.
The chief minister of Assam, who served in Congress for more than two decades before joining the BJP in 2015, pointed out that there was “not a single word” about Hamas in the CWC resolution.
“They could have been balanced by saying we condemn Hamas, but at the same time we stand by India’s position of supporting an independent Palestine. But they didn’t do that,” he said.
Mr. Sarma said strong action should be taken against terrorism but Congress due to its appeasement policy is saying nothing against terrorism despite the fact that India is a victim of terrorism.
“It’s a matter of sadness. Congress, the country’s oldest party, should have openly condemned Hamas. At the same time they can say that we support Palestine. That’s another matter. As Congress is eyeing the vote bank of Owaisi (Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi) and is siding with Hamas,” he said.
The Prime Minister said that since Rahul Gandhi is a motorcyclist, there is a possibility that he might one day cycle in Gaza or hop on a tractor there.
Asked about NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s reported criticism of the government for “standing on Israel’s side” despite India’s longstanding support for Palestine, Sarma said there are people in India who are silencing Hamas because they cannot see anything beyond the Palestinian issue. reconciliation.
“Even Hamas does not condemn Israel the way some people in India condemn Israel. Even Hamas has accepted that it made a mistake. Hamas knows that they have kidnapped children and that is a sin,” he said.
