Underlining New Delhi’s position on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, India’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj on Wednesday said India has consistently called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an end to violence.
Responding to a question about how India is playing a mediating role to resolve the war between Russia and Ukraine, Ms. Kamboj stated that India has time and again called on both sides to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue and has also expressed support for all diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

The UN ambassador also highlighted the recent telephone conversation that took place between Ukrainian President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 27 this year, in which he reassured India’s commitment to continue providing humanitarian aid to the affected civilian population.

Prime Minister Modi strongly reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and said both sides must return to dialogue and diplomacy to find a lasting solution to their differences, the Prime Minister’s Office press release said.
He also expressed India’s support for all peace efforts and assured India’s commitment to continue providing humanitarian assistance to the affected civilian population, the release added.
“I had a phone call with Prime Minister Modi and wished a successful G20 presidency. It was on this platform that I announced the peace formula and now I count on India’s participation in its implementation. I also thanked for humanitarian aid and support in the UN, the Ukrainian president tweeted.
Meanwhile, the President of Ukraine conveyed his best wishes to the Indian Presidency of the G20.
Regarding India’s role, Ambassador Kamboj further added by shedding light on Prime Minister Modi’s statement to President Zelensky, reaffirming India’s support for any peace effort and commitment to continue providing humanitarian assistance to the affected civilian population.
“The Prime Minister, the Indian Prime Minister, has spoken to the presidents of Ukraine and Russia on several occasions and reiterated India’s position, including with President Zelensky of Ukraine on December 27 this year. The Foreign Minister has also expressed our position on several As to your question about the role played by India, I can only quote what the Indian Prime Minister recently said to President Zelensky that India supports any peace effort and that we are determined to continue providing humanitarian aid to the affected civilian population,” Ms. Kamboj said.
India’s permanent ambassador shared his views on UN reforms and underlined that the reform of the same Security Council is urgently needed as a majority of member states feel the need to do the same.
“We know that discussions of reform are meandering aimlessly, with a few countries using the smokescreen of consensus to prevent progress. Meanwhile, the world is changing and has changed profoundly, whether in terms of economic prosperity, technological capabilities, political influence and development progress.
There is an overwhelming majority of member states that believe that reforms are urgently needed,” the ambassador added.
This year, more than 70 leaders strongly advocated for reform at UNGA during the high-level week. The aim of the orientation of a new multilateral system, or standards as we call them in India, is to increase the effectiveness and legitimacy of multilateralism in the eyes of the international community and the general public worldwide.
India hosted a special meeting of the UN Security Council CTC in October to discuss cryptocurrency financing of terrorism and the use of drones in new-age terrorism. On October 29, the CTC unanimously adopted the Delhi Declaration on Countering the Use of New and Emerging Technologies for Terrorist Purposes.
The statement included a list of actions, including the choice to continue working on the three themes of the special meeting’s recommendations and the intention to establish a set of non-binding guiding principles to help member states address the threat posed by of the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes.
India’s permanent ambassador recalled the special meeting in India, which resulted in the historic Delhi Declaration. “And this was followed up by a presidential statement on counter-terrorism in December during our current presidency,” she added.
Summarizing India’s tenure as a member of the UN Security Council and December presidency, Ms Kamboj quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi as saying that India used the prestige and experience of being the world’s largest democracy for the good of the entire world.
