India reported 2,47,417 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Thursday. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 13.11 percent — an increase from 11.5% yesterday — while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 10.80 percent.
The country also reported 380 new deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities in India to 485,035, while the number of active cases rose to 11,17,531.
Active cases comprise 3.08 percent of total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate fell to 95.59 percent, the ministry said.

Delhi today saw the biggest daily spike in Covid infections with 28,867 new Covid cases, while the positivity rate rose to 29 percent, indicating that for every three tests performed, one person tests positive.
On Thursday morning, the country registered 2.47 lakh new cases – the unprecedented rise being caused by Omicron, the new variant that has sparked a new wave of infections around the world.
Amid rising COVID-19 cases in Delhi, the number of containment zones has risen from less than 1,000 to nearly 24,000 in the past two weeks, officials said on Thursday.
As of December 30, 2020, there were 800 containment zones in the national capital. According to the latest official figures, that number had risen to 23,997 by mid-January.
South Delhi topped the list of 11 districts in the city with 8,383 containment zones. The districts with a higher number of containment zones were West Delhi at 4,109, Central Delhi at 3,493 and New Delhi at 2,354.
The lowest number of containment zones was in East Delhi with 151, Northeast Delhi with 279, Northwest with 547 and Southwest Delhi with 851.
A residential area or an apartment is usually closed in if there are three people infected with the corona virus living there. However, district authorities have discretion to declare a residential area a containment zone if even one person is found infected.
Most containment zones in Delhi are microns with less than three patients. Currently, an infected person with mild symptoms or without symptoms must undergo seven days of home isolation.
Assam reported 3,238 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, 36 fewer than the previous day, as the total caseload in the state rose to 6,38,288, according to a bulletin from the National Health Mission (NHM).
There are currently 13,785 active cases of coronavirus, 1,933 more than Wednesday, while the number of patients recovering from the disease during the day was 1,242, an increase of 511 from the previous day.
Three people died from the infection on Thursday, one less than the day before, bringing the toll to 6,192.
The number of corona patients who die from another cause remained at 1,347.
The new fatalities were reported from Cachar, Charaideo and Kamrup (nationwide). The new cases were detected after testing 41,165 samples during the day.
India’s cumulative COVID-19 vaccination coverage exceeded 155.28 crore doses on Thursday, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported Thursday.
More than 63 lakh vaccine doses have been delivered until 7pm on Thursday, the ministry added.
“India’s COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage has crossed 155.28 Crore (1,55,28,76,434) today. More than 63 lakh (63,92,572) vaccine doses have been administered until 7pm today. More than 33 lakh (33,12,573) ) Precautionary doses for the identified categories of beneficiaries for COVID vaccination have been administered to date,” the ministry said in a statement.
The daily number of vaccinations is expected to increase with the final reports for today being prepared by late tonight.
