The number of new Covid cases in Delhi has crossed the 1000 mark after 7 months, reaching 1,313 – a 42 percent increase from yesterday’s figures. The positivity rate reached 1.73 percent, health department data showed. No new deaths were reported.
As of May 26, the national capital had reported 1,491 cases with a 1.93 percent positivity rate and 130 deaths.
The national capital had registered 923 coronavirus cases on Wednesday — a massive 86 percent increase from Tuesday and the highest since May 30.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra has seen 198 new Omicron cases amid fears of a third Covid wave as it recorded 5,368 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, 37 percent more than the previous day. The new variant has been labeled “highly contagious” by experts.
Mumbai also saw another huge increase with 3,671 infections – 46% higher compared to the previous day. In 190 cases, the city also recorded the state’s most fresh Omicron patients.
With 13,154 people testing positive for coronavirus infection on Thursday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in India rose to 3,48,22,040, while the number of active cases rose to 82,402. The death toll rose to 4,80,860 with 268 new fatalities, the data said.

As many as 141 Mumbai residents who had not traveled abroad tested positive for the Omicron variant of the coronavirus on Thursday, the civil body said.
Of the 153 individuals found to have an Omicron infection in the city during the day, only 12 had international travel histories, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.
But according to the Maharashtra government’s release earlier in the evening, of the 198 Omicron cases reported in the state, as many as 190 came from Mumbai. The difference in state and BMC stats could not be reconciled.
US health authorities on Thursday urged Americans to avoid cruises, even if they have been vaccinated, citing the rise in Covid-19 cases due to the Omicron variant.
“Avoid cruise travel, regardless of vaccination status,” reads a message on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, in which cruising travel information has been upgraded to Level 4, the highest on the Covid risk scale.
“Even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk of contracting and spreading Covid-19 strains,” the post said.
Between December 15 and 29, according to an email from a CDC spokesperson, 5,013 Covid cases in U.S. waters were reported to the CDC, 31 times the level in the previous two weeks.
