Tehran:
The daughter of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was released on Wednesday after serving a two-year prison sentence in Tehran's Evin prison, media in the Islamic Republic reported.
Faezeh Hashemi Rafsanjani, 61, was arrested in September 2022 for allegedly inciting people to join protests that erupted after the killing of Mahsa Amini that month. Amini was previously arrested for allegedly violating Iran's strict dress code for women.
The women's rights activist and former member of parliament has been released from prison in Tehran following an appeals court ruling, her lawyer Mohammad Hossein Aghassi told Hammihan newspaper.
Hashemi, who was previously convicted in 2012 for propaganda against the Islamic Republic, was sentenced to five years in prison after the protests in 2022.
Her father was president of Iran from 1989 to 1997 and was known for his efforts to improve relations with the West.
