New Delhi:
A woman has approached the Delhi High Court to prevent her boyfriend from traveling to Switzerland to undergo euthanasia due to his debilitating inflammatory disease.
In her plea, the 49-year-old petitioner has asked the central government not to grant “emigration permission” to her boyfriend, who is in his late forties and suffering from myalgic encephalomyelitis, who is supposed to be traveling for the doctor-assisted suicide.
Myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome is a “complex, debilitating, long-term neuroinflammatory disease” and the petitioner’s friend, who had the first symptom of the disease in 2014, is “now completely bedridden” and can only walk “a few steps home.” ‘, the plea informs.
The petitioner has stated that her friend had previously been treated at AIIMS but that this could not continue during the pandemic due to “donor availability issues”.
“There are no financial constraints to give Respondent No. 3 (the petitioner’s friend) better treatment in India or abroad. humbly admits that there is still a glimmer of hope for the improvement of his condition,” said the plea filed by attorney Subhash Chandran KR.
The petitioner has therefore continued to pray for the Center to set up a medical council to investigate the medical condition of her friend who was granted the required visa to Switzerland under the “false” pretext to seek treatment, as well as to provide necessary medical assistance to him.
“The Petitioner has prayed very respectfully herein that this Hon’ble Court may order Respondent No. 1 (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) not to grant an emigration permit to Respondent No. 3 because he made false claims before both Indian and foreign authorities for obtaining travel consents; and also instruct Respondent No. 2 (Ministry of Health) to establish a medical council to investigate the medical condition of Respondent No. 3 and provide the necessary medical assistance taking into account his special state of health” the plea said.
The petitioner’s friend’s parents, relatives and friends would suffer irreparable loss and hardship and will face a painful moment if the prayers are not allowed, the plea said.
