imphal:
The Divisional Preventive Force of Imphal Customs seized tablets worth Rs 2.68 crore and packages containing 736 grams (gross) of opium, worth Rs 1.46 lakh, customs officials informed on Wednesday.
On January 30, 26,800 WY tablets and 2 packs containing 736 grams (gross) of opium were seized in Imphal West District, Manipur, according to customs officials.
Earlier, on Jan. 29, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials intercepted a passenger at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and seized foreign currency notes worth Rs 64 lakh from his possession, officials said.
The foreign currency (euro and New Zealand dollar) was hidden in the handle of a trolley bag, the CISF said.
On Saturday, CISF surveillance and intelligence agencies noticed a passenger, later identified as Surinder Singh Rihal, behaving suspiciously at the check-in near row ‘K’, officials said in a statement, adding that he went to Bangkok by a Thai Airlines flight.
Further, according to the statement, during a random check of his luggage, questionable images of money being hidden in “the handles of the trolley” were noticed. The matter was communicated to customs officials at the departure terminal and the passenger was allowed to proceed. He was kept under physical and electronic surveillance.
Furthermore, due to document issues, the passenger was not accepted for check-in by the airlines. The matter was discussed with customs officials and the passenger was intercepted by CISF’s surveillance and intelligence services at the check-in area and taken to the International Departure Customs Office.
A thorough check of his luggage at the customs office of departure found foreign currency (euro and New Zealand dollars) hidden in the trolley handle of his two luggage. He could not provide any documents for carrying such a huge amount of foreign currency.
The passenger, along with the detected foreign currency worth about Rs 64 lakh, were handed over to customs officials for further legal action.
Further information is awaited.
