New Delhi:
Two road users were injured Friday afternoon after being hit by a car allegedly driven by a drunk man, police said.
The suspect was arrested after a short chase, they said, adding that the incident occurred when the driver of the vehicle was trying to avoid the challan.
Chief Constable Vikas who suffered a head injury is being treated at a hospital, while his colleague HC Surat was discharged after treatment for minor abrasions, they said.
The suspect has been identified as Santosh, 31, a resident of Dwarka’s JJ Colony, police said.
Deputy Police Commissioner (Dwarka) M Harsha Vardhan said that around 2:15 a.m., a Maruti Ertiga car driven by a person under the influence of alcohol hit two traffic police officers. The incident took place in Sector-1 area of Dwarka.
Immediately, police personnel chased the car and arrested Dabri’s driver, he said.
He was sent for medical examination and his blood alcohol content was found to be six times the legal limit, he added.
A case under sections 186 (interfering with a public official in the performance of his public functions), 353 (assault or use of criminal force to deter a public official from performing his duty), and 307 (attempted murder ) of India’s Penal Code has been investigated registered with Dwarka South Police Station, the senior police officer said.
“It appears that the suspect was trying to avoid challan, which led to this incident,” the DCP said.
