New Delhi:
Congress president Sonia Gandhi cracked the whip on Sunday, removing former Goa chief Digambar Kamat as a permanent invitee to the all-powerful Congress Working Committee with immediate effect.
The move comes days after Kamat’s alleged role in the recent turmoil at the Goa Congress, where the party has prevented a split in the unit.
Sources said Kamat was accused of playing an active role with the BJP in the unrest after some MPs went incommunicado and failed to attend party meetings.
Congress leadership previously removed Michael Lobo as leader of Congress Legislative Party in Goa assembly.
“The congress chairman has removed Shri Digambar Kamat from his current position as permanent invitee to the working committee of the Congress with immediate effect,” the party said in a statement.
The party’s local unit accused Mr Lobo and Mr Kamat of “conspiring” and “bumping” with the ruling BJP to “make a split” in the legislative wing of the big old party.
