One person has been arrested in the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in a car on Saturday night in Hyderabad, police said. Of the five people identified, three are minors, it added.
The crime in the heart of Telangana’s capital, which reportedly involved children and grandchildren of politicians in luxury cars, has sparked protests. Police said the interior minister’s grandson was not involved.
“The victim could not reveal anything about the perpetrators. She only revealed one name and special teams were immediately formed to arrest them. CCTV images have been recovered. We have identified five perpetrators based on CCTV images and according to the statement of the victim,” said Police Officer Joel Davis.
The security footage showed the girl with the suspected attackers outside the pub where she had met them. The boys had offered to drop her off at home. Instead, she was attacked in a parked car in an upscale area of the city. Her attackers took turns raping her while the others stood guard outside the car.
At a large protest at a police station tonight, screaming BJP workers were carried away by police officers.
Police initially registered a case of “outrageous modesty” based on the girl’s father’s complaint. It was later turned into a rape case.
“Her father approached us. According to what he also told us, we filed a case of scandalous modesty and under POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses). He was not sure what was happening, the girl was unable to do anything reveal,” police officer Joel Davis told DailyExpertNews.
Telangana IT Minister KT Rama Rao has asked Home Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali, the DGP and the Hyderabad Police Commissioner to take immediate and severe action in the rape case and has asked them “everyone involved, regardless of their status or preferences”.
Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha expressed his confidence in the Telangana police and concerns for the safety of the women.
“In the sad and shameful incident where a minor was raped, we stand by the family. I am confident that the Telangana Police will get to the bottom of this. We have a track record of zero tolerance when it comes to the women’s safety,” K Kavitha posted on Twitter.
